The Adult-Adolescent Parenting Inventory (AAPI) is a 40 question inventory created to help parents better understand their own beliefs and attitudes about raising children and promote positive parenting practices. It was developed by Dr. Stephen Bavolek and colleagues who wanted to find out what kinds of parenting approaches help children thrive and which ones might unintentionally lead to stress or harm.
The AAPI looks at five key areas that really shape how we parent:
-
What we expect from our kids: Are our expectations age-appropriate?
-
How well we understand their feelings and needs: Do we respond with empathy?
-
How we handle discipline: Do we believe in physical punishment, or are there other tools we can use that enhance our self-worth and maintain relationships?
-
Who takes care of who emotionally – Are we leaning on our kids for support they aren’t able to give?
-
How much independence we give – Are we letting our kids grow and make age-appropriate choices? Do they have freedom to explore their environments in safety?
It’s not a test you pass or fail. It’s a tool to help you reflect, grow, and feel more confident in your parenting. Many parents find it empowering because it gives them a clearer picture of where they're doing great and where they might want to learn something new.
